Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +00001Q1. What is a FAQ?
2A1. A rare small animal of the species 'Textius Electronicus'. It is known for
3 its helpful attitude and vicious misspellings.
4
5Q2. Okay, fine, what is _this_ FAQ?
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +00006A2. This FAQ is for questions (that we have answers to) that have been asked
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +00007 repeatedly either in emails or on IRC.
8
9Q3. What is Rockbox? What is it's purpose?
10A3. The purpose of this project is to write an Open Source replacement
11 firmware for the Archos Jukebox 6000, Studio 20 and Recorder MP3 players.
12
13Q4. I want to write code for my Archos, how do I proceed?
Robert Hakdb96b1f2002-08-21 11:06:32 +000014A4. First make sure to read the file CONTRIBUTING in the docs directory
Robert Hak54099ba2002-08-22 07:02:03 +000015 on Sourceforge. See http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/contributing.html
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000016 if you do not want to have to wade through the CVS directories.
17
Robert Hak09499b52002-08-22 07:03:17 +000018Q5: What is CVS?
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000019A5: Concurrent Versions System (http://www.cvshome.org). We have a small
20 help page about how to use this to get, update and commit files on the web
21 at http://rockbox.haxx.se/cvs.html
22
23Q6. What exactly is the CONTRIBUTING file?
24A6. Just like the name implies, it lists conventions that the project follows,
25 and in turn asks you to follow, for the formating of source code in
26 general.
27
28Q7. Okay, so I read CONTRIBUTING and although I don't agree with all your
29 conventions, I am going to be sensible and follow them anyway. Now what?
30A7. Start by reading up on the information about the jukeboxes on our web page.
31 Then go into CVS and look at the code we've written. Then take what you
32 need and start writing.
33
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000034Q8. I want to join the development team, but don't have a SourceForge account,
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000035 what should I do?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000036A8. You don't need a SourceForge account to help developing Rockbox. Just
37 submit patches (http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/patch.html)
Björn Stenberg10fc53c2002-08-23 20:49:12 +000038
39 If your patches are consistently well-written and thus accepted, you may
40 ultimately be offered CVS commit access. If that should happen, you will
41 need to get a Sourceforge account:
42 http://sourceforge.net/account/register.php
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000043
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000044Q9. Do you have a mailing list?
45A9. Sure do! As a matter of fact, we have several of them for specific
Robert Hakf5a9a722002-08-21 17:33:56 +000046 things. Please check out: http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000047
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000048Q10. Great you have a mailing list! Is there anyway for me to catch up on
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000049 past posts?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000050A10. Check out the archives at: http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000051
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000052Q11. How can I meet the developers working on the project?
53A11. One way is by visiting us on IRC. Head on over to the server
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000054 irc.openprojects.net, and then join "#rockbox". There is usually at
55 least one person there. If you don't see any activity, feel free to post
56 questions anyway, serveral of us log the channel and will get you answers
57 when we unidle.
58
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000059Q12: Wow, you guys talk on IRC alot? I wish I had been around for those
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000060 conversations to see what happened.
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000061A12: We are glad you mentioned that! http://rockbox.haxx.se/irc happens
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000062 to have a list of various logs we have recorded of events in the channel.
63 Feel free to read up, and ask questions on what you find.
64
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000065Q13. What is this "SourceForge" you keep mentioning?
66A13. http://www.sourceforge.net
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000067
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000068Q14. Can the changes or the software that Rockbox suggests or offers
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000069 possibly damage my Archos Player?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000070A14. All firmware mods that are presented are still highly experimental.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000071 Try them at your own risk. We offer no guarantee that this software, or
72 the hardware modifications we show, will not damage your player or void
73 your warranty. That said, we have not been able to damage any of our
74 units by modifying only the firmware. You can accidentally password
75 protect your harddisk, but there are ways around that. (See below.)
76
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000077Q15. I want to see what the inside of my player looks like, but I would really
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000078 like to avoid voiding my warranty. Is there anything you can suggest?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000079A15. We have a collection of photos of both the player and recorder. Look at
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000080 http://rockbox.haxx.se/internals/
81
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000082Q16. What exactly are you trying to achieve with this line of development?
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000083 (A.K.A. whats your purpose for being here?)
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +000084A16. Firstly, we wouldn't start something like this if we didn't simply enjoy
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +000085 it profusely. This is great fun!
86 Secondly, we feel the firmware is lacking some features and contain a
87 number of annoying bugs that we want to fix.
88 Some ideas would include (in no particular order):
89 - No pause between songs
90 - Mid-song resume
91 - Mid-playlist resume
92 - No-scan playlists
93 - Unlimited playlist size
94 - Autobuild playlists (ie: "all songs in this directory tree")
95 - Auto-continue play in the next directory
96 - Current folder and all sub-folder random play
97 - Full disk random play
98 - REAL random
99 - Multi song queue
100 - Faster scroll speed
101 - More cool features with the wire remote control (including
102 controlling your Archos from your car radio (req hw mod))
103 - Support playing of other files types (ie: Ogg Vorbis support)
104 - Support for megabass switch (req hw mod)
105 - Player control via USB
106 - Memory expansion?
107 Note: Just because something is on this list, does not mean that it is
Robert Hakf5a9a722002-08-21 17:33:56 +0000108 technically feasible. (But hey we can dream) And something not
109 being on the list does not mean it isn't a neat idea. Bring it to
110 the list.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000111
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000112Q17. You mention supporting Ogg Vorbis and other file types on your list of
Björn Stenberg92408562002-09-07 12:13:40 +0000113 ideas. What is the status on that?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000114A17. Pessimist's Answer: At the current time we believe this is not very
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000115 likely. The Micronas chip (MAS3507) decoder in the archos does not
116 natively support decoding and there is very little program space in the
117 player to implement it ourselves. The alternative would be to write a
118 software decoder as part of the RockBox firmware. However, as much as we
119 love our players, the computing power of the Archos (SH1 microcontroller)
120 is not fully sufficent for this need.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000121
122 Optimist's Answer: We can play any format if only we can write code for
123 the DSP to decode it. The MAS 3507 (and 3587) are generic DSPs that
124 simply have MP3 codecs in ROM. We can download new codecs in them and
125 we will be the first to celebrate if we can get OGG or FLAC or anything
126 into these DSPs. Unfortunately, we have no docs or tools for writing new
127 MAS DSP code and Intermetall is very secretive about it. If anyone can
128 help, please get in touch!
129
Björn Stenberg92408562002-09-07 12:13:40 +0000130 The recent release of Tremor (integer Ogg decoder) indicates it uses
131 around 100 KB for lookup tables. That's not unreasonable for a decoder,
132 but we only have 4 KB for both code *and* data. So the grim reality is
133 that Ogg will never be supported by the Archos Players and Recorders.
134
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000135Q18. What about supporting playing of WMA files?
136A18. Dear Mr. Gates, you have two options. Re-read question #18, or go buy
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000137 your own project.
138
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000139Q19: But you don't understand, I'm not talking about decoding here,
Robert Hak49c2fda2002-08-29 13:36:05 +0000140 since the data we want may already be in the decoded format (PCM).
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000141A19: Okay, last time. No. We have no problems whatsoever reading different
Robert Hak49c2fda2002-08-29 13:36:05 +0000142 file formats, call it PCM, WAV, GRI, PQR or whatever. The problem is
143 that the CODEC only accepts MP3 data and nothing else. We could write a
144 new CODEC if we knew how to do it, but there is no documentation on the
145 DSP. Please note that we have no access to the DAC, so we can't send the
146 data directly to the DAC.
147
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000148Q20. What is the most recent version of Rockbox?
149A20. We recently released version 1.4, so head on over to
Robert Hak7bf657a2002-08-28 09:45:09 +0000150 http://rockbox.haxx.se/download/ and pull it down.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000151 Make sure to read the release notes.
Robert Haka0f9f622002-10-12 04:23:05 +0000152 (http://rockbox.haxx.se/download/rockbox-1.4-notes.txt).
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000153
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000154Q21. What do you plan to add to coming versions?
155A21. We have a rough idea of which features we plan/expect/hope to be included
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000156 in which versions. Once again, remember that none of this is written in
157 stone (noticing a pattern yet?)
158
Robert Haka0f9f622002-10-12 04:23:05 +0000159 Version 2.0
160 Recording, Autobuild playlists, File/directory management
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000161
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000162Q22. I tried one of your firmware files and now I can't access my harddisk!
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000163 When I turn on my jukebox, it says:
164 Part. Error
165 Pls Chck HD
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000166A22. Your harddisk has been password protected. We're not 100% sure why it
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000167 happens, but you can unlock it yourself. Look at:
168 http://rockbox.haxx.se/lock.html
169
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000170Q23: This FAQ doesn't answer the question I have. What should I do?
171A23: You have a couple options here. You could forget the question, find an
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000172 easier question, or accept '42' as the answer no matter what. We don't
173 really recommend any of these (though I do opt for '42' often myself).
174 What we do recommend is stopping by IRC, reading
175 http://rockbox.haxx.se to see if the question was answered else
176 where and just not included here, or ultimatly dropping an email to the
177 mailing list (rockbox@cool.haxx.se) or the FAQ maintainer listed on the
178 project homepage.
179
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000180Q24: Are there other ways to contact the developers?
181A24: Yes.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000182
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000183Q25: Are you going to tell us what they are?
184A25: No. Post to the mailing list and we will get back to you.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000185
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000186Q26: But I _really_ want to talk with you in person.
187A26: I'm sorry. My girlfriend/boyfriend/pet says I'm not allowed to, and the
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000188 doctors here won't let me have pens or pencils. They say its some rule
189 about us not having sharp objects. I'm sorry. Now please stop calling me
190 here.
191
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000192Q27: Will you ever port Quake II to the Archos?
193A27: If you ask that again, I'm sending your address and phone number to the
194 guy that mailed us with question #24.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000195
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000196Q28: Umm, was that sarcasm?
197A28: That's it, I'm mailing him now.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000198
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000199Q29: Is this legal? I mean, I'd just hate to see something like that
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000200 challenged under the DMCA in all its ridiculousness. Any thoughts or
201 ideas?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000202A29: We believe we are in the green on this. We are not violating anyone's
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000203 copyright and we are not circumventing any copy protection scheme.
204 This has been a big point for the project since its inception. Some
205 people wanted us to distribute patched versions of the original firmware,
206 but seeing as that _would_ have violated Archos' copyright, we didn't
207 follow that course of action.
208
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000209Q30: On the website [and various information postings] you state
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000210 "Every tiny bit was reverse engineered, disassembled and then
211 re-written from scratch".
212 If it was rewritten from scratch then why was it first reverse-engineered
213 and disassembled? Instead this sounds more like someone disassembled it
214 then used the understanding that they gained to create a new version,
215 which is not quite the same as "from scratch".
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000216A30: Don't confuse the terms. Reverse engineering means examining a product
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000217 to find out how it works. Disassembling the firmware is merely one tool
218 used in that examination. Oscilloscopes and logic analyzers are other
219 tools we have used. We have written every single byte of the Rockbox
220 firmware. But we could not have written the software without first
221 researching how the hardware was put together, i.e. reverse engineer it.
222 All of this is completely legal. If you define "from scratch" as writing
223 software without first researching the surrounding interfaces, then no
224 software has ever been written from scratch.
225
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000226Q31: Wait a minute here. When you released version 1.0 you did not have a
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000227 single one of the ideas you have mentioned on your website actually
228 implimented! Calling this version 1.0 is really misleading. Whats the
229 story?!
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000230A31: In simple terms, the first release was called 1.0 because it had a basic
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000231 working feature set that worked and had no known bugs. That is what 1.0
232 meant. It is true that Rockbox 1.0 lacked most of the feature set that
233 every sane user wanted. However, we never said it was more
Robert Hak11f2c3c2002-08-24 03:52:01 +0000234 feature-complete or better in any way then the original firmware that
235 early in the project. The first release was done as a proof of concept
236 that our ideas are moving in the right direction. We also hoped that it
237 would help bring the project some attention, and some additional
238 developers. Adding the missing features was just a matter of time. In
239 more recent releases we have completed many of our desired goals, and
240 several new ones that were implimented to fullfill user requests.
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000241
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000242Q32: I've heard talk of a 'Rolo'. What is that? (Or 'All you ever wanted
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000243 to know about Rockbox boot loaders')
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000244A32: Rolo is our bootloader. Rolo became available with our 1.4 release.
Robert Haka0f9f622002-10-12 04:23:05 +0000245 To make use of Rolo, you must have a file with the same extension as
246 your Rockbox firmware (.ajz on Recorder, .mod on Player) but a different
247 name. You can then browse to it, and you 'run' the other firmware
248 you wish to switch to by pressing play.
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000249
250 *Poof* You will reboot to that firmware. (Note that in order to return
251 to Rockbox you may need to reboot manually if the new firmware you loaded
252 does not have a bootloader itself.)
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000253
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000254Q33: Can I use the Archos as an USB harddisk to store data from my PDA/
Björn Stenbergf2b8aec2002-10-22 20:23:16 +0000255 digital camera/phone etc.
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000256A33: No. USB is a master/slave protocol, and both the Archos and your device
Björn Stenbergf2b8aec2002-10-22 20:23:16 +0000257 are slaves. Two slaves cannot communicate without a master (usually a PC).
258 (An upcoming extension called USB On-The-Go will let slaves communicate
259 without a master, but current Archoses will not be able to support that.)
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000260
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000261Q34: When I use RockBox my jukebox's red "error" light turns on a lot, but this
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000262 doesn't happen on the factory firmware. Why?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000263A34: Rockbox uses the red LED as harddisk activity light, not as an error
Robert Hak019203b2002-08-21 10:36:05 +0000264 light. Relax and enjoy the music.
265
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000266Q35: I have a question about the batteries...
267A35: STOP! We have put together a completely different FAQ for battery
Robert Hak35c04802002-08-21 11:07:28 +0000268 related questions.
269 Check out: http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/battery-faq.html

Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000271Q36. I have a question about patches...
272A36. Check out http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/patch.html as it should answer any
273 patch related questions you may have.
274
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000275Q37: What is the WPS?
276A37: That is the 'While Playing Screen'. Basically this is what is shown on
Robert Hakfac78522002-08-22 03:00:12 +0000277 your player's display while we are playing your song.
278
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000279Q38: What good is the WPS? How usable/flexible is it?
280A38: It is very good if you want information about the current item playing ;)
281 By using a WPS configuration file you can manage exactly how/what you
282 want displayed on your Archos Player. (Even better yet, if you want
283 a feature that's not there, we are _always_ open to suggestions!)
284 Please see http://rockbox.haxx.se/manual/wps.html for information.
Robert Hakfac78522002-08-22 03:00:12 +0000285
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000286Q40: So how do I load/make a .wps file?
287A40: You check out http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/custom_wps_format.html to learn
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000288 the format/features of a .wps file, and you visit
289 http://rockbox.haxx.se/manual/wps.html to learn how to load it ;)
290
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000291Q41: Does Rockobx support other languages? How do I load/use different
292 languages?
293A41: See: http://rockbox.haxx.se/lang
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000294
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000295Q42: Does Rockbox support other fonts/character sets?
296A42: Recorders do, Players don't.
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000297
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000298Q43: How do I use the loadable fonts?
299A43: If you own a Recorder see: http://rockbox.haxx.se/fonts/ Players
300 cannot make use of loadable fonts.
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000301
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000302Q44: Why can't I use loadable fonts on the Player?
303A44: This is because the Player font is character cell based (as opposed to
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000304 the Recorder's bitmap based display). This
Robert Hak0dbcb432002-08-26 23:58:05 +0000305 means that we are able to choose what characters to display, but not how
306 to display them. We do have the ability to change/create up to 4 chars
307 on one model and 8 on another, however we are currently using several of
308 these 'letters' to store icons for the player.
309
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000310Q45: Why don't you have any games available for the Players?
311A45: The display on the Players is character cell and not bitmap based.
Robert Hak0dbcb432002-08-26 23:58:05 +0000312 This means we can only control what characters get displayed, not
313 what pixels are shown. This makes the prospect of game play very
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000314 slim (at least for anything involving graphics, so if you have text
315 based games that only use 2 lines send them on in!).
Robert Hak5d3a0d32002-08-27 13:50:00 +0000316
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000317Q46: I keep shutting off my player in my pocket. Can the OFF (Recorder) or
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000318 STOP (Player) key be locked?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000319A46: No. Unfortunately, the ON/OFF mechanisms are handled entirely in
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000320 hardware. The firmware can read the keys, but can't prevent them from
321 shutting off the player.
322
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000323Q47: Where's the recording option? Why can't I record?!!
324A47: I'd like to say we hid it because we don't like you, but you seem to be
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000325 a good person so here's the truth. It's just not implimented in Rockbox
326 yet. But stress not, you can still use Rolo to boot the default Archos
327 firmware and record from there. (Check out question #33).
328
Daniel Stenbergdfa51102002-12-09 08:21:18 +0000329 Recent development versions (daily builds) have initial support for
330 Recording. If you're brave and want to help out, get one, try out and
331 report your findings!
332
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000333Q48: When recording is finally implimented in Rockbox, will it be possible to
Robert Hak5d3a0d32002-08-27 13:50:00 +0000334 use custom codecs (like LAME) or is there a built in codec in the Archos?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000335A48: The MP3 encoder is in the MAS3587F chip, and nothing we can change.
Robert Hak5d3a0d32002-08-27 13:50:00 +0000336
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000337Q49: What are the max/min bitrates for recording on the Recorder's encoder?
338A49: The builtin encoder is variable bit rate only with a max of 192kbit/s,
Robert Hak5d3a0d32002-08-27 13:50:00 +0000339 and a min of 32kbit/s.
340
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000341Q50: Would it be possible to record from line in on the player?
342A50: No.
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000343
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000344Q51: I have a question about the id3v1 and id3v2 tags...
345A51: Stop! Here is all the information about that (if you still have
Robert Hak5d3a0d32002-08-27 13:50:00 +0000346 questions when done, ask then.)
347
Robert Hakccedcdb2002-08-27 14:29:02 +0000348 - Rockbox supports both id3v1 and id3v2
Björn Stenberg3478d9b2002-08-27 22:20:14 +0000349
Robert Hakccedcdb2002-08-27 14:29:02 +0000350 - The id3v2 support is limited to the first 300 bytes of the file. Some
Björn Stenberg3478d9b2002-08-27 22:20:14 +0000351 ripper programs tend to add very big tags first and then the important
352 ones Rockbox wants to read end up beyond the first 300 bytes and then
353 they remain unknown.
354
Robert Hakccedcdb2002-08-27 14:29:02 +0000355 - If you believe that the tags you don't see *are* within 300 bytes, then
Björn Stenberg3478d9b2002-08-27 22:20:14 +0000356 please make the mp3 file available for one of the developers to try out.
357
Robert Hakccedcdb2002-08-27 14:29:02 +0000358 - The 300-byte limit is subject to be removed in a future version
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000359 (Actually, it is already removed in post-1.4 versions)
Robert Hak7f7851a2002-08-27 14:14:18 +0000360
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000361Q52: Where exactly did the name 'Rockbox' come from?
362A52: Well you can follow the full line of emails at
Robert Hakd4d71d12002-08-27 16:40:32 +0000363 http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2002-01/0062.shtml
364 However, the brief rundown is that it was recommended first by
365 Tome Cvitan, and put to a vote (which it lost).
366
367 Funny thing about democracys. This isn't one ;) Our beloved project
Björn Stenberg92408562002-09-07 12:13:40 +0000368 leader vetoed the winning name and chose Rockbox instead.
Robert Hakd4d71d12002-08-27 16:40:32 +0000369 http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2002-01/0134.shtml
370
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000371 There you have it. Recommended by users, decision by dictator.
Robert Hak49c2fda2002-08-29 13:36:05 +0000372
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000373Q53: Why is there a limit of 400 files in a directory?
374A53: We have answered this question numerous times. It is mentioned in the
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000375 release notes, and in the mailing list archives
376 (http://rockbox.haxx.se/mail/archive/rockbox-archive-2002-08/0448.shtml).
377 But, hey, we wouldn't want people to have to work to get an answer.
378 (If you are reading this, feel proud, for you are the exception).
379
380 We settled on 400 files in a directory because file listings take up
381 memory on the unit, and we felt that 400 is significantly large enough
Björn Stenberg92408562002-09-07 12:13:40 +0000382 for a majority of the populace. We prefer the option of limiting
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000383 file limits in order to provide a greater amount of memory for buffering
384 of files being played.
385
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000386Q54: Okay, I understand your 400 file limit. But why hardcode? Why not
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000387 have this be dynamically allocated?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000388A54: Because it's useless. Dynamic memory is only ever useful if you have
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000389 memory consumers (tasks) that run at different points in time, and thus
390 can reuse the same memory for different purposes.
391
392 We don't have that. We must be able to show a big dir, index a big
393 playlist and play a big mp3 file, all at the same time. They cannot use
394 the same memory, and thus dynamic memory buys us nothing but extra
395 complexity. If we used dynamic memory for this, we would get all kinds
396 of odd bugs. Playlists that only got half-loaded if placed in certain
Robert Haka0f9f622002-10-12 04:23:05 +0000397 directories. Parts of the disk you couldn't go to if playing a certain
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000398 playlist etc.
399
400 We have a number of tasks that consume memory. They can all run at the
401 same time, using all of their alotted memory. Therefore it is much better
402 to allocate that memory to them beforehand and not pretend that anyone
403 else is able to use it. This is standard practice in memory-limited
404 systems.
405
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000406Q55: Why is there a 10,000 song limit on playlists?
407A55: This is another hardcoded limit. We feel that as bigger disks arrive
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000408 that this limit will increase. Because of the way that playlists are
409 stored, it tends to be a bit more maleable then the directory file limit.
410 For further detail, look at questions 47 and 48 and replace any instances
411 of '200' with '10,000'.
412
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000413Q56: You don't understand! I _really_ need to have more then 400 files
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000414 in a directory!
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000415A56: The use of really big directories was a workaround for the poor playlist
Björn Stenberg1d8ac3e2002-09-07 09:58:00 +0000416 capabilities of the original Archos firmware. With Rockbox, you no longer
Robert Haka0f9f622002-10-12 04:23:05 +0000417 need this workaround. Organize your files in directories, then build
Björn Stenberg1d8ac3e2002-09-07 09:58:00 +0000418 playlists for all collections you want to shuffle-play.
Robert Hak9756cb02002-09-03 19:41:49 +0000419
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000420Q57: How can I make playlists on my PC?
421A57: There are many programs that can create .m3u playlists. WinAmp is one.
Björn Stenberg1d8ac3e2002-09-07 09:58:00 +0000422 Another simple method, that requires no extra software, is to use dir:
423
Björn Stenberg361546d2002-09-07 18:07:29 +0000424 dir /b /s X:\ > X:\allfiles.m3u
425 dir /b /s X:\Pop > X:\pop.m3u
426
427 ...where X: is your archos drive.
Björn Stenberg1d8ac3e2002-09-07 09:58:00 +0000428
429 Linux users can use the 'find' command:
430
431 cd /mnt/archos
432 find . -name "*.mp3" > all.m3u
433
434 Remember that playlists are simple text files. You can edit them with any
435 normal text editor.
Robert Hakc5740ad2002-09-04 08:24:11 +0000436
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000437Q58: How does the shuffle work?
438A58: It sees the playlist as a deck of cards, shuffling the entries using a
Linus Nielsen Feltzing4854a2c2002-09-18 09:25:55 +0000439 pseudo-random generator called the Mersenne Twister. After shuffling,
440 the list is never changed again until you reshuffle the list, by
441 stopping the playback and restarting. If the repeat mode is enabled,
442 the list will simply start over from the first file again, without
443 reshuffling.
444 The random seed is stored in the persistent setting area, so that the
445 resume feature can shuffle the playlist in exactly the same way when
446 resuming.
Robert Hakcd3efa62002-10-01 08:58:56 +0000447
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000448Q59: How can I find out about all the neat features that Rockbox has?
449A59: This information is in our manual (It sometimes gets a bit out of
Robert Hakd7529d82002-10-14 10:56:47 +0000450 date, so please bear with us.) The information you are most likely
451 looking for is a bit down the tree, so the here is the url:
452 http://rockbox.haxx.se/manual/rec-general.html
453
Daniel Stenberg4cd4d422002-12-09 08:11:35 +0000454 Also, check out the features-list at:
455 http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/features.html
456
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000457Q60: How can I see what bugs are currently open/being worked on?
458A60: Check out http://rockbox.haxx.se/bugs.shtml for a listing of bugs
Robert Hakcd3efa62002-10-01 08:58:56 +0000459 that have been reported.
460
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000461Q61: How can I report about bugs in Rockbox?
462A61: If we were better programmers we would take that as an insult. But we
Robert Hakcd3efa62002-10-01 08:58:56 +0000463 aren't, so we won't. The first step in reporting a bug is to review
464 the rules we ask you to follow in your submission (listed at:
465 http://rockbox.haxx.se/bugs.shtml#rules).
466
467 Please note that we ask reports of bugs in CVS/daily builds to be sent
468 to the mailing list, and bugs in released versions of Rockbox to be
469 submitted through SourceForge's bug tracker. (A link to the bug tracker
470 can be found under our bug submission rules.)
Linus Nielsen Feltzing180485c2002-10-01 09:37:34 +0000471
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000472Q62: Could you tell me how to apply a patch?
473A62: There are a ton of ways to apply a patch. One way is to use the (GNU)
Robert Hak57bf2ca2002-10-12 08:34:57 +0000474 'patch' program. It used like this:
475
476 $ cd rockbox-root
477 $ patch < magic.patch
478
479 Sometimes, the diff has path info you want to strip so that patch can
480 find your file names. -p then takes off a number of "path parts" from
481 left:
482
483 $ patch -p0 < magic.patch
484 - or -
485 $ patch -p1 < magic.patch
486
487 If patch can't apply some changes that are in the diff, you'll get those
488 particular changes in a file named "[source-file].rej".
Robert Hake6477682002-10-17 09:48:47 +0000489
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000490Q63: Whats with all the different versions of Rockbox?
491A63: There are really only two versions of Rockbox. One for Players and one
Robert Hake1d51532002-10-17 10:16:58 +0000492 for Recorders. However, we do have 3 other 'versions' of Rockbox
493 available for download. These would be Releases, Daily Builds, and
494 Bleeding Edge.
Robert Hake6477682002-10-17 09:48:47 +0000495
Robert Hake1d51532002-10-17 10:16:58 +0000496 The Release version (currently 1.4) has a fixed feature set. This means
497 that we are confident that few, if any, significant bugs still reside
498 within the code/features of that 'version'. This is the version for the
499 common user.
Robert Hake6477682002-10-17 09:48:47 +0000500
Robert Hake1d51532002-10-17 10:16:58 +0000501 The Daily Builds (see: http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml#target_builds)
502 are automated daily builds of the CVS code. As such they contain all
503 the new features (and bugs ;) ) that have been introduced after the
504 last official release, and upto and including that morning.
Robert Hake6477682002-10-17 09:48:47 +0000505
Robert Hake1d51532002-10-17 10:16:58 +0000506 The Bleeding Edge 'versions' are automated builds that are updated
507 every 20 minutes or so. This are as feature full and bug ridden as you
508 can possibly get if you are not a developer, or are not pulling directly
509 from the CVS tree.
510
511 Please Note: Daily and Bleeding Edge builds are expected to be buggy.
512 We ask that you _do not_ submit bug reports for Bleeding Edge versions,
513 but would love to hear any reports you may have about Release or Daily
514 build versions. (see question #62).
515
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000516Q64: I am in Windows and can't create a .rockbox directory to store my
Robert Hakab0641a2002-10-18 15:59:24 +0000517 files. When are you going to fix this?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000518A64: We won't. The limitations of your operating system is not reason
Robert Hakab0641a2002-10-18 15:59:24 +0000519 enough for us to change how we handle things. And you _can_ create
520 this directory. Open a command line and type:
521 mkdir j:\.rockbox
Robert Hakb1ee36e2002-10-19 04:51:44 +0000522 You will need to correct the location for the drive letter that Windows
523 assigns to your drive.
Robert Hake1d51532002-10-17 10:16:58 +0000524
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000525Q65: I own a Mac. I can't seem to create the .rockbox file. Can you
Robert Hakb1ee36e2002-10-19 04:51:44 +0000526 fix this?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000527A65: Truth is, we don't need to fix anything. If you are using OSX then you
Robert Hakb1ee36e2002-10-19 04:51:44 +0000528 can just open a console, change directories to the device and just:
529 mkdir .rockbox
530
531 If you are in another version then you should be able to do command-N in
532 the Finder, then name the folder.
Björn Stenbergf2b8aec2002-10-22 20:23:16 +0000533
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000534Q66: Will Rockbox work on an of Archos' other units? (FM player, Multimedia)
535A66: Unfortunately, RockBox will not likely support any units other than
Robert Hakbca1f642002-11-12 07:01:53 +0000536 those that we do currently support.
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000537
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000538Q67: I copied the rockbox MOD/AJZ file to the root, removed the jukebox
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000539 safely and rebooted. But Rockbox still didn't load. What is wrong?
540 I am running Windows.
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000541A67: The old MOD/AJZ was not entirely deleted from the disk. It is still
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000542 there, and the boot loader finds that one instead of the new file. Here's
543 what you can do:
544
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000545 - Download and install Directory Snoop (version 4.03 in november 2002)
546 from http://www.briggsoft.com/dsnoop.htm
547 It's shareware, the trial version can be used 25 times.
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000548
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000549 Directory Snoop can display true drive contents by bypassing the
550 operating system and reading the raw drive sectors directly.
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000551
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000552 - Plug the Jukebox in the PC as usual and power on
Linus Nielsen Feltzingbda36dc2002-12-06 22:18:54 +0000553
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000554 - Launch Directory snoop
555
556 - Click on the Jukebox drive letter in the [select drive] field in the
557 toolbar. The content of the jukebox harddrive appears in the main
558 window. Files which appear in red color don't seem to be present on the
559 harddrive, but they still here.
560
561 - Simply select the appropriate files (red color) and purge them
562 (Purge button). Of course, don't erase the new archos.mod file and the
563 .rockbox directory :)
564
565 - Safely remove (Windows unmount device function) the Jukebox.
566 Power it up and ...voila... Rockbox is there!

Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000569
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000570Q68: What kind of mic can I connect to my AJBR?
571A68: There are several types of microphones.
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000572
Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000573 Dynamic: The one that's available from archos is a dynamic one.
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000574 Their output level is high enough so that they don't need an
575 amplifier (that's the reason why the archos mic is of this type -
576 it's cheap).
Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000577 - cheap
578 - no good sound quality of cheap dynamic mics (good enough for
579 speech)
580 - no amplifier needed
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000581
Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000582 Backplate Condenser: These are the professional mics. They need phantom
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000583 power (48V) for charging the condenser.
584 They also need an amplifier, because their output level is low.
Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000585 - good sound quality
586 - need phantom power (48V)
587 - need amplifier
588 - expensive
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000589
590 Electret Condenser: These capsules are cheap and result in a good
591 recording quality. They don't need phantom power voltage. They need power
592 for the FET (field effect transistor) that's inside. If you have
593 such a mic with a battery in it, it is mostly because of the FET
594 power, not because of an amplification circuit inside the mic.
595 These mics are in all the consumer products like mobile phones,
596 PC headsets and so on.
Uwe Freesee229ca42002-12-10 23:54:22 +0000597 - cheap (2 EUR for a capsule)
598 - good sound quality
599 - need amplifier
600 - need power for the FET (1,5 - 15V)
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000601
602 Recommendation for do-it-yourselfers: Use electret condenser mic capsules,
603 solder an amplifier for them which both amplifies the output level
604 and feeds the power needed for the FET to the capsule.
605 The one on http://www.geocities.com/ferocious_1999/md/micpreamp2.html
606 was soldered and tested by Uwe Freese, and it works.
607 There are some others available from www.elv.de and other sellers.
608
609 Recommendation for others: Buy some mic + preamp combination which can be
610 plugged into a line in of any amplifier. Maybe such a commercially
611 available combination needs a power supply and doesn't work with
612 batteries. Some are very expensive. (If you know a cheap solution
613 with an electret condenser mic + preamp, please tell us!)
614
615 What does not work: Don't use an amplifier thing that is simply
616 connected between some mic cable. Maybe it sounds as if it could work, but
617 I doesn't. If the piece of (expensive) electronic doesn't have a
618 power source and your mic doen't either, it does not work!
619 A PC sound card or md player usually has a power output (same pin
620 where the sound goes through, dc value) for feeding the FET of
621 an electret condenser capsule (see above) (and this power could
622 also used to feed a mic amplifier), but the archos hasn't
623 (it's a line in and no mic in!).
624
Uwe Freese5ff17c82002-12-13 00:05:12 +0000625 If you want to know more on microphone powering, read this:
626 http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/circuits/microphone_powering.html.
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000627 (As described, you also need amplification.)
Uwe Freese112df432002-12-14 23:36:50 +0000628
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000629Q69: I can't start rockbox when the charger is connected. What am I doing
Björn Stenbergeedd8842002-12-18 09:41:36 +0000630 wrong?
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000631A69: If your device is off and you connect the charger, the Archos charger code
Uwe Freese112df432002-12-14 23:36:50 +0000632 is started immediately. You can then start Rockbox with holding down the
633 ON key for several seconds. Hold the key down a really long time, until
634 you see the Rockbox logo!
Linus Nielsen Feltzing5347b4e2002-12-17 00:08:14 +0000635
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000636Q70: Why can't you implement a crossfader? That would be so cool!
637A70: To crossfade you need to decode two MP3 streams simultaneously. The MP3
Linus Nielsen Feltzing5347b4e2002-12-17 00:08:14 +0000638 decoding is done in hardware and we only have one decoder chip, so it
639 can't be done. Sorry.
Daniel Stenberg0cc2c1c2003-01-27 08:19:40 +0000640
Robert Hak6bb1af02003-02-20 21:49:02 +0000641Q71: My screen is all black/white when I run Rockbox on my Recorder!
642A71: We have no way of knowing the correct contrast setting from start and the
Daniel Stenberg0cc2c1c2003-01-27 08:19:40 +0000643 displays differ a lot. Change your contrast setting by doing this:
644
645 F1, down, right, down, down, right, down, down, down, right, down (until
646 you like the contrast)
